mima Winter exhibitionsmima opens its winter season with three elegant exhibitions. Opening on Friday 11 December the exhibitions will include some of the latest acquisitions to mima collection, rare drawings by Ellsworth Kelly and a sound piece by William Furlong.

One place to call home: recent acquisitions will be the first opportunity for visitors to see new works to mima collection in one exhibition. One place to call home considers some of the roles that craft collections can play in a gallery’s development.

Many of the works in this exhibition have been acquired through the support of the Northern Rock Foundation Craft Acquisition Scheme. In 2004 the foundation made £150,000 available to mima for the continuation of our ceramics and jewellery collection.

One of the acquisitions on show will be, Wunderkammer by Edmund de Waal, his most important work to date. There will also be The Present by Kepa Karmoma, a neckpiece made from glass and concrete as well as a neckpiece by Ted Noten made from sliced porcelain figures. A continuation of One place to call home will look in detail at five Karl Fritsch rings from mima collection.

Ellsworth Kelly: drawings 1954-1962 looks at rare drawing from this key eight-year period, when Kelly pioneered his much-admired abstract style. For the exhibition the artist has personally selected 23 drawings that use a variety of techniques including ink, graphite, oil paint and collage. Two of the works on display, Untitled, 1957 and Untitled, 1959, have been acquired by mima through the Art Fund International scheme; in 2007 mima was awarded £1 million to build their collections of international contemporary art over a five-year period. The works were described recently by Kelly as “two of the most revealing and important drawings made at that time”. The exhibition will see all of the works on display in Europe for the first time.

mima sound space on the third floor outdoor terrace will be playing works by Irish artist William Furlong. The new sound-work Fragmented: a red couch, a blue curtain, a black piece of furniture is based on the reconstruction of an Audio Arts conversation with Ellsworth Kelly, recorded in 1992.

One place to call home: recent acquisitions was realised with the support of the Northern rock foundation, the art fund and the V&A Purchase Grant Fund. Ellsworth Kelly: Drawings 1954-1962 was realised with the support of art fund.
