Super Spring season at Town Hall

From the nation’s top comedians, to foot-stomping rock, spell-binding theatre for children to world class musicianship, Middlesbrough Town Hall’s Spring season has it all.

In practically a who’s who of the best in stand-up comedy Middlesbrough Town Hall has a top notch rib-tickling line-up this season. Plus see your chance to win tickets for a fabulous performance below.

Top comedy and magic

Julian ClaryCamp legend Julian Clary invites you to an intimate evening as he celebrates 25 years in the spotlight (February 7).

Roy ‘Chubby’ Brown is set to go down a storm on his honorary hometown stage (February 4 and 5). TV’s best are coming to Teesside with the darkly brilliant Sean Hughes (February 27) and Sean Lock will be opening up his hilarious ‘Lockipedia’ (March 22).

There are still a few tickets left for rapier wit Jimmy Carr (January 18) and an extra date has now been added (May 10). Mock the Week host Dara O’Briain (April 29) hits the road again after last year’s sell out tour and brilliant break-through comic Rhod Gilbert will be taking a journey of self-discovery (April 16).

Dara O'BriainMiddlesbrough comedian/magician Peter Firman brings his jaw-dropping show to his hometown (April 9) and multi-award winning comedian John Bishop appears on April 11. The controversial and brilliant Frankie Boyle has sold out (May 17 and 18). Returns may become available.

The best and one of the most popular comedy clubs in the North The Big Mouth Comedy Club runs throughout the Spring season (January 16, January 22, February 6, March 6, April 3, May 1) and features top acts such as Roger Monkhouse, Stephen K Amos, Tony Burgess, Steve Shanyaski and Steve Harris.

Fantastic and fun music

The music line-up this Spring at the Town Hall hosts a feast for your ears with joyous retro sounds, smooth soul favourites and classical and cutting-edge experimentation.

The Bootleg Sixties show (February 13) combines great music from the decade with fantastic archive footage as well as performances from one of Sir Elton John’s favourite bands ‘The Overtures’. See below for your chance to win a pair of tickets! The Rat Pack Vegas Spectacular (February 14) evokes wonderful memories of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis delivered in true Vegas style.

St. Patrick's Week Show with Wildcats of Kilkenny, Zion and Stavros FlatleyThe Town Hall welcomes one of the greatest voices the UK has ever produced Ruby Turner and Band (February 20) and the Wildcats of Kilkenny with Zion: Bob Marley Tribute and Stavros Flatley (April 24 - Rescheduled Date!) host a St Partrick’s Bash to beat all others with the eclectic line-up including the Britain’s Got Talent hit Greek-Irish dancers.

Bjorn Again (March 15) featuring ABBA’s hits and songs from Mamma Mia promises a great party night out for everyone of all ages. Rollermania An evening with Les McKeown and the Legendary Bay City Rollers (April 28) takes a trip back to the 1970’s biggest pop sensation evoking teenage memories and stories of living nostalgia.

Jools HollandFor Britain’s premier offering of rhythm and blues make sure you catch Dr Feelgood (June 12) and for the classic traditional rock fan UFO (April 23) are a must-see. Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra (May 19) make a welcome return to Middlesbrough and are guaranteed to create a party atmosphere with a very special guest.

For something completely different the AV Festival 10: Energy presents Silent Sound (March 7). This part classical concert and part public séance uses live music and subliminal messages to create a charged atmosphere.

Classical line-up

There is a great deal for the lover of classical music to cherish this Spring at the Town Hall with Cleveland Philarmonic Orchestra (March 14) presenting a Mother’s Day Matinee of Strauss, Tchaikovsky, Dvorak and Britten.

The Northern Sinfonia is joined by distinguished oboist, conductor and composer Heinz Holliger to perform Richard Strauss’ exquisite Oboe Concerto (March 18) and the Sinfonia look back to the Classical Period of Mozart and Haydn with stunning guitarist Xuefei Yang (April 14).

The Moscow State Symphony Orchestra orchestra will perform Tchaikovsky’s atmospheric Marche Slave as well as Rachmaninov’s ever-popular Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, played by the brilliant young Russian pianist, Igor Tchetuev (May 20).

Spoken word

Peter HookFor the simple pleasure of the spoken word look no further than the Town Hall. In The Charley Boorman Show (February 25) the actor, adventurer and author hosts an evening of stories, anecdotes and tales from his worldwide escapades. In Unknown Pleasures with Peter Hook (April 18) the bass slinging Manchester legend tells the story of the iconic club, New Order, Joy Division and the Madchester scene. And for a change of pace Blowers – Caught Short and Grumpy (May 25) cricket commentator Henry Blofeld recalls great stories and anecdotes about his laughter-filled life and famous friends.


Theatre and performance

The Spring programme also features high quality theatre and performance. A Village Life (March 2) takes a hard look at the reality behind the idyll of rural life. Russell Kane’s Fakespeare – The Tragickal Saveings of King Nigel (March 4) is a celebrated blank verse bonanza which was a complete sell out at this year’s Edinburgh fringe.

Talking Tom by Tom Kelly (March 23) sees Jarrow born playwright Tom Kelly’s hilarious monologues brought to life by Donald McBride and Pat Dunn.

The extraordinary life of bungling scholar, journalist and TV celebrity come-powerful politician Boris Johnson is examined in Boris Johnson and his Sodding Bicycle (April 7) and The Most Ordinary Place in the World (April 8) is a modern love story inspired by Brief Encounter.

Great for kids of all ages

For the kids there is bags of entertainment and mystery. My Mother Told Me Not to Stare (February 23) is a deliciously dark operetta for curious children and their grown ups. Alan in Wonderland and the 3 Goats plus…(April 6) is a non-traditional children‘s comedy which creates a magical world. For ages 5 – 10. Who’s Been Sitting in my Chair? (April 15) is a playful interpretation of a well-known tale – with porridge and bears and one-two-three chairs. For ages 3 – 7. And the Magic of the Mummy Tales of Ancient Egypt (May 8) explores the myths behind the artefacts of Ancient Egypt. For children aged 5 - 12 years and adults too.

Plus Teesside Hospice's Beer festival and Here Come the Boys!

On top of all that the Town Hall Crypt hosts Teesside Hospice’s Beer Festival (March 26 and 27) with live entertainment from The Passionkillers and The Source.

And last but not least Here Come the Boys! (June 17) artistically encapsulates a wide range of sensuous and visually stimulating performances that offer the perfect blend of live music, hot dance moves and muscle!

In person: Box office is open Monday–Wednesday: 10am-5pm, Thursday: 10am-8pm, Friday: 10am-4.30pm, Saturday: 9am-1.30pm and on performance nights 6pm until show goes up.

Access information for Middlesbrough Town Hall

The Main Hall can accommodate up to 10 wheelchairs and the Crypt up to 6 wheelchairs. One free ticket is available for each companion. Please inform the Box Office at time of booking. Please note that the lifts will only hold 330 pounds. Please bear this in mind if you are the owner of a heavy wheelchair.
