Students celebrated yesterday after their specialist art and design college was named the best in the country for the third year running.
Cleveland College of Art & Design was also the best performing publicly-funded school or college at level 3 in the North East, again for the third consecutive year.
Its students scored 953.4 points on average compared to a state school and college average of 701.8 in the Tees Valley. The Government’s Department for Children, Schools and Families also highlighted the added value the college provides its students, measuring their performance set against a number of factors.
This puts it in the top 20 institutions in the country for the second year out of more than 2,600 schools and colleges in England.
For graphics student Vicky Duffy the league table results confirmed what she and her colleagues have known for years. “It’s an outstanding place to study,” said the 18-year-old, of Eston, who has just completed a National Diploma in graphic design and is now studying a foundation degree there.
“I think this is thoroughly deserved. The college has a wonderful family feel to it and you make loads of friends. The tutors have such passion for their jobs that it inspires you as well.
“They also have close links with industry and organise visiting speakers, masterclasses and live projects with real clients to give you a taste of the real world.”
Vicky is one of many students at the College that achieved straight distinctions at National Diploma plus grade A at A Level.
The results top off an excellent year for the college, one of just four nationally dedicated to art and design, which was also hailed outstanding by Ofsted inspectors.
Cleveland College of Art & Design principal Martin Raby said: “I am delighted at the success of our students. Many surprise themselves when they realise the progress that they can make over the course of two years at the college.
“The very high score reflects the points that our students gain for university entry, which is why more than 90 per cent of them go on to higher education.”
He said students achieved the equivalent of over 1½ A level grades above expectations, adding: “We also have very high absolute student achievement. Whilst enthusiasm for art and design is the key for entry to the college, we have many academically able students who will leave with an AS level and an A level in addition to their National Diploma. Many of our students can progress to their pick of premier art and design institutions and ultimately secure good jobs.”
Staff will be showing off what makes the college special at an open day on Saturday, January 30, from 10am to 2pm, with conducted tours and the chance to discuss courses.
