Middlesbrough Council is a partner in the 'Boroughbus' scheme which supports socially-necessary bus services in the town and also the neighbouring boroughs of Stockton and Redcar & Cleveland. These contracted services are especially useful for many people traveling on Sundays, early morning or evening, or to get to school or work.
Middlesbrough Bus Station is the bus and coach hub of Middlesbrough and the Tees Valley - owned and operated by Middlesbrough Borough Council. A recent refurbishment programme costing £1.7 million included new lighting and flooring, an extended express passenger lounge and improved public information systems. This recognises the bus station's importance as a major gateway to the town. It is next to the new Captain Cook Square Shopping Centre and across the road from the Hill Street Centre.

Middlesbrough is on the National Cycle Network. National Cycle Route 1 (Inverness to Dover) runs for 25 km through the town. From Middlesbrough it runs west along the banks of the Tees to Stockton. Southwards, the route also forms part of the White Rose Cycle Route to York. Coulby Newham in South Middlesbrough was designed with cycling in mind. There are dedicated cycleways around the neighbourhood, including National Cycle Route 1 which links Coulby Newham with the town centre. Other cycle routes link the town centre with Berwick Hills, Pallister Park, Thorntree and North Ormesby.
Middlesbrough Environment City has opened the region's first staffed, secure cycle park which offers free parking for up to 55 cycles, with overspill for a further 24. Showers, changing facilities, lockers and toilets are provided. The centre also has a cycling information centre with route maps, cycle guides and leaflets.
