mima and the new Centre Squaremima is a £14.2 million landmark new building designed by Erick van Egeraat Associated Architects. Located in the heart of Middlesbrough, mima is surrounded by a £5 million public square and situated between the Carnegie Library and Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen's sculpture, 'Bottle of Notes'.

The gallery brings together the town's art collections for the first time and hosts temporary exhibitions of fine art and craft from 1900 to the present day. Featuring the work of internationally acclaimed artists, the programme includes painting, drawing, ceramics, jewellery, sound, film, mixed media, photography and sculpture.

The modern and contemporary art collection comprises of well over 1000 paintings, drawings, prints, photographs and sculpture which include works by Ben Nicholson, David Bomberg, LS Lowry, Stanley Spencer, Gwen John, David Hockney and Bridget Riley as well as many young internationally acclaimed artists. Exhibitions at mima change every quarter.

In collaboration with the Contemporary Art Society, mima continues to acquire more works. The contemporary international jewellery collection consists of both precious and non-precious jewellery. Examples from the collection have been featured in many major publications on the subject and have toured widely. The 20th century British ceramics collection is one of the most important of its kind in the country, charting the studio ceramics movement from the 1920s to the present day.
