Stockton and Middlesbrough Councils have for the first time come together to establish a vision for their shared future, the result of bold and innovative thinking which aims to secure a step-change in the regeneration of the area. The vision is to create a city-scale environment at the heart of the Tees Valley worthy of 650000 people, and has the potential to become one of the most significant regeneration projects in the country
The urban core of Stockton and Middlesbrough lies at the heart of the Tees Valley conurbation, encompassing the two town centres and the River Tees corridor that joins them. It is an area with significant potential based around the development of high quality riverside sites and the creation of a city-scale infrastructure and atmosphere that builds on the strengths of both towns.
The Stockton-Middlesbrough Initiative is a key driver in the delivery of the Tees Valley Vision, an ambitious regeneration programme spanning 15 years, which presents a generational opportunity to transform the Tees Valley. The Initiative will create a dynamic and renewed centre, which reflects the scale and aspirations of the Tees Valley, capable of competing both regionally and nationally, which gives a distinct sense of place, and a new identify to the sub-region.
Consultants Gillespies have been appointed to undertake a major study into how this transformation can be effected. They are drawing up a masterplan for the area that will ensure a co-ordinated approach to the development of key sites as well as identifying funding that will support the Initiative. The masterplan is expected to produce a range of high quality developments including office and business premises, housing, as well as new leisure, recreation and cultural facilities.
