26th June 2009

Categories: Latest News

Armed Forces DayA series of special events at Middlesbrough's Dorman Museum took place including the launch of a new military heritage trail, to mark the first Armed Forces Day on Saturday, June 27.

The day was formerly known as Veterans' Day but its aim has been changed to reflect the wider role that the UK Armed Forces play in the life of the nation and its local communities.

The Armed Forces Day flag flew from atop Town Hall in Centre Square.

The Dorman Museum hosted a special display of military-related objects which are usually held in the museum store. Visitors had a chance to handle an air raid warden's tin helmet, a gas mask, ration books and other paraphernalia. A range of publications were available to take home.

Many children came with their families to the Dorman Museum to make cards to send to UK troops serving overseas.

Jonathan Swingler of BBC Tees visiting TroopsJonathan Swingler from BBC Tees showed a slideshow of his photos taken in Afghanistan, and in Norfolk - the site of a training ground.

Ian Stubbs, assistant curator at the Dorman, led a walk in the neighbouring Albert Park looking at sites with a military heritage link.

These are part of a new Military Heritage Trail around Middlesbrough that takes in a number of other sites including the Town Hall, Middlesbrough railway station, Linthorpe Cemetery and the Dorman Museum.

A PDF download is available below - It also features a sneak preview of some related events taking place during Discover Middlesbrough in September.

The Military Heritage Trail has been devised by the Council's Tourism Department working in partnership with the Dorman Museum.
