The fastest Father Christmases in the land will gather on Saturday 19th December to battle it out in Middlesbrough’s Albert Park for the annual Santa Run and parkrun organisers are hoping for more than 100 festive competitors
As with all parkrun events entry is free and there will be sponsored cash prizes worth a total of £100 for both senior and junior participants, provided by local company Amazing Interactives – but only for athletes completing the run in a full Santa Suit!
This year’s event will also see runners and their supporters raise funds for two great local causes - Zoe’s Place and Teesside Hospice.
Parkrun Director Andy Fisher said he was hoping for a good turn-out of speedy Santas – the weekly Saturday runs regularly attract between 150 and 175 runners.
He said: “The Park’s a fantastic setting and the runs have grown in popularity.
“There’s always a fantastic atmosphere – I’m hoping for more than 100 Santas this year to build on the success of last year’s event.”
After they cross the finish line, the runners will be treated to home-made mince pies and a glass of warming gluhwein (rehydrating and non-alcoholic!) as a reward for their efforts.
The parkrun is open to runners of all ages and abilities and is one of the leading lights in a growing series across the UK.
It’s proved to be a great opportunity for runners to gauge their fitness with a run against the clock and get in shape for longer events like the annual Middlesbrough Tees Pride 10k.
To enable the handicap to be set up, runners are asked to register for the Santa Run by Saturday, December 12, with those taking part required to wear at least a Santa hat and beard.
For more information about the Albert Park Santa Run, which starts at 9am, visit www.albert.parkrun.com and to register, log on to www.register.parkrun.com
To take part, runners are simply asked to register in advance – by 6pm on Friday evening – at www.register.parkrun.com
All they have to do then is turn up in time for the start at 9am and wait for their time to be posted online, along with photographs of the event, the same weekend.
