Twist cast members (L-R) Claire Bibby, Thea Balich, Ellis J Wells and Clive Greenwood

Baroque Theatre Company, one of the country’s most acclaimed independent professional touring theatre companies, brings stylish comedy thriller Twist to Middlesbrough Theatre on Friday, May 18.

Set in the 1990s in the affluent Hampstead area of London, Twist tells the tense but hilarious story of mild-mannered accountant David who sees a sensational way of making a fortune by writing a kiss-and-tell biography about his venomous wife Sarah.

However, the play takes a turn when David realises that the book will do even better if Sarah, the nation’s favourite celebrity from hit soap Doctors and Nurses, is actually murdered…how will he do it and just what will happen?

Twist is written by Miles Tredinnick a rock musician, songwriter and a stage and screenwriter who has written for the hit BBC 1 television series Birds of a Feather and the late great Frankie Howerd.

Twist, directed by award-winning director Adam Morley, is a slick, stylish, edgy thriller with specially selected music and echoes of Tarantino’s hit film Pulp Fiction that will have audiences guessing until the shocking end.

No stranger to radio, TV and theatre, Adam Morley has directed more 60 productions including Newsrevue, the world’s longest running live comedy show at the Canal Café Theatre in London.

Morley’s work for Baroque Theatre Company includes Great Expectations, in celebration of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Dickens in 2010, Up Pompeii, The 101 Dalmatians, Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Christmas Carol, Veronica’s Room and Kindly Leave the Stage. Morley is the associate director at Canal Café Theatre and artistic director of Baroque Theatre Company.

Adam said: “We want to embrace new technology to reflect modern life and attract a younger audience.

“We’ve added digital projections to make it look like a comic book, with the play punctuated by images, text and music.

“It’s a multi-media experience, like watching the thriller on your phone with other things going on around you.”

Claire Bibby, producer, actress and founder of Baroque Theatre Company, said: “We’re delighted to be collaborating once again with the multi-talented Miles Tredinnick having toured nationally with his hilarious Up Pompeii in 2014.

“Audiences can look forward to a great cast put together especially for this premiere national tour of Twist a comedy thriller with music that features a set with specially integrated projections to fully enhance the story.”
